Ebook About From the assassination that triggered World War I to the ethnic warfare in Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia, the Balkans have been the crucible of the twentieth century, the place where terrorism and genocide first became tools of policy. Chosen as one of the Best Books of the Year by The New York Times, and greeted with critical acclaim as "the most insightful and timely work on the Balkans to date" (The Boston Globe), Kaplan's prescient, enthralling, and often chilling political travelogue is already a modern classic. This new edition of Balkan Ghosts includes six opinion pieces written by Robert Kaplan about the Balkans between 1996 and 2000 beginning just after the implementation of the Dayton Peace Accords and ending after the conclusion of the Kosovo war, with the removal of Slobodan Milosevic from power.Book Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History Review :
In full disclosure, I am Romanian. I immigrated to US twenty years ago, after the fall of communism. As I had gotten interested in the WWI, I purchased this book hoping for an unbiased view on various issues. I enjoyed the book very much until the Romanian trip. A gut punch followed.Instead of an unbiased look, I found an agenda driven, disgusting and humiliating rant. I love my adoptive country, but I also love my home country. Romanians are painfully aware of their shortcomings as a nation. We get reminded of them all the time. And still, reading the segment about my country left me in disbelieve. Fragments of historical truth are mixed with gross exaggerations. Coming out of half century of North Korean style communism, Romania was not pretty. I haven’t traveled through Uganda, but I did take the subway train for Far Rockaway and drove through villages of Louisiana and Mississippi. I drove along the Chehalis River. The abandoned industrial scenery of Aberdeen, WA reminded me of home. I crossed the border from Romania to Hungary at Nadlac and encountered the Hungarian Gypsy. Didn’t feel much of a difference… Once the author decides to call Eminescu a xenophobe, I had enough. Grow a spine Mr. Kaplan. I drove through Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia this summer to help a friend with some research on his book. I loved the countries and the people, but came away shaking my head. Just under the surface there is still a simmering ethnic hatred and I decided I needed to know more. The author being an American is able to take himself away from the hostility that plagued the area for ages. While there I spoke to older people about the bitterness in the area, I was always told its always the fault of other ethnic or religious groups. When I spoke to younger people that had left their homeland, went to college and returned. I am always told "I am Croatian and I am Catholic so this is my opinion," Or "I am a Serb, and I am Orthodox so this is my opinion." I definitely wanted more of a historical insight. This book was a good starting point. I purchased some other books but can clearly see the authors prejudices. The book is a quick read and covers a wide area. I may purchase a few more copies to give to friends.
